ИНТЕРЕСНЫЙ ВОПРОС:

August 7, 2009 at 3:25 pm (ПЕРЕВОДЫ)

Gooid point about ‘white trash’. As for ‘punk’, I always think of the Dirty Harry line – nothing positive there. ‘Thug’ maybe implies violence too strongly? I have to note that ‘gopnik’ is new to me, but if it is similar to the British ‘chav’, then it is not as strong as ‘thug’.

‘Гопник’ is new to me, too; I looked at your Wiki link and they have references to ‘блатные’ and ‘босяки’; у меня это вызывает ассоциации с агрессивной трусливой шпаной, косящей под уголовников. Возможно, я неправа.

Sounds about right. It could be that I am not getting the word ‘thug’ entirely right.

Heh, it’s nice how this brought us to The One, PBUH:-) Anyway, the bone of contention now seems to be how much violence/criminality does the term ‘gopnik’ imply in everyday usage. This would obviously influence the choice of a possible American equivalent.

From what I’ve seen of гопник’s, chav and yobbo come to mind – in a British context, that is.

Come to think of it, what would be the essential criterial semantic features of a гопник – in the same way that hag would be +female, +old, +unpleasant in appearance?

I have no idea, having never seen one (I left in 74!), but from what I’ve read so far, both ‘chav’ and ‘yobbo’ fit the bill quite well. Problem is finding an American equivalent.

this is a somewhat satirical, but mostly true to life description
