THE ETHICAL IMPLICATIONS OF THE TAZRIA/ METZORA WEEKLY TORAH PORTIONS.

Rabbinic literature teaches us that the word metzor’a (leprous) is short for motzi shem r’a (slanderous). Consequently, the Tazria/Metzora weekly Torah portions became the subject of a debate on the ethics of language, serving to prevent the dangerous modern incarnation of the ancient disease: the plague of information. Jewish sources are full of important insights into this issue, with one of the most prolific thinkers on this subject being Rabbi Yisrael Meir Kagan, also known as Chafetz Chaim (The Seeker of Life), the author of the eponymous book dealing with the issue of slander. I tried to summarize his conclusions as ten commandments that would serve as an ethical code, a kind of vaccine against the plague of information leprosy. These are general principles, dealing with the details of which can be quite complicated.

The problem with socialism is socialism, because there are no socialists. Socialism is a system based upon an assumption about human nature that simply isn’t true. I can design a perfect canine community in which dogs never chase squirrels or groom their nether regions in an indelicate manner. But the moment I take that idea from the drawing board to the real world, I will discover that I cannot get dogs to behave against their nature — at least not without inflicting a terrible amount of punishment. Likewise, it’s easy to design a society that rewards each according to his need instead of his ability. The hard part is getting the crooked timber of humanity to yield to your vision.

עברו הרבה שנים מאז הפסקתי להיות חסידה של תומס פרידמן ומאמריו (עברו גם הרבה שנים מאז הפסקתי לקרוא את הניו-יורק טיימס באופן כללי, חוץ מביקורות הקולנוע שלהם). פרידמן הוא אדם אינטליגנטי ואף מוכשר בכתיבה, אך מחשבתו אינה מעמיקה מספיק, ולעיתים הוא אף גובל בעצלות אינטלקטואלית. עם זאת, לעיתים קרובות הבחנותיו נכונות (אם כי לא ממש מקוריות), וסגנון הכתיבה שלו כן מקורי, חביב וקולח. חשבתי שיהיה משעשע לתרגם מאמר משלו, במיוחד כשזה דן בישראל בנימה כה אופטימית – נעזוב עכשיו את השאלה האם אופטימיות זו מצדקת. נעזוב גם את דעתי על באפט. נעזוב גם את מה ש”קרה” לשקל מאז נכתב המאמר (הוא פורסם לפני כשנה).
